Power Limited Technician Exam Prep Class
Student Furnished Items

The following student furnished items are required for the PLT Exam Prep Class:

1. The 2020 National Electrical Code (NEC) book  (soft cover ... not the NEC Handbook)

2. Highlighters (at least two different colors)

3. Basic 4-function calculator recommended (preferably not your cell phone)

4. Notebook, notepad, or note paper

5. Pen and/or pencil

Beginning in July 2020, this exam prep class will be based on the 2020 National Electrical Code.  Earlier editions of the NEC (pre 2020) are not suitable for this class.

All materials used in the class will reference the 2020 edition of the NEC.  The class does not cover the transition to the new edition as the 2017 and earlier editions of the NEC are no longer relevant to the exam.

It is recommended that participants use the basic soft-cover 2020 NEC book for this class.  There is also a spiral bound soft-cover version and a loose-leaf version.  These are more expensive but are equally serviceable for the class.  These books can be found at bookstores, some electrical supply houses, some technical college bookstores, and online at www.mikeholt.com.

It is strongly recommended that participants NOT use the 2020 NEC Handbook.  It is not the document that will be provided to applicants on exam day and so "appears" different.  It is larger, more expensive, and the page numbering does not match the basic code book page numbering.  This could be somewhat of a challenge in class and possibly when taking the PLT examination.

Some taking this exam prep class have little or no experience with the NEC or the electrical wiring and systems that it addresses.  Where that is the case, the Low Voltage Guy recommends Mike Holt's book "Understanding the NEC Requirements for Limited Energy and Communication Systems".  The book is available from Mike Holt Enterprises at www.mikeholt.com.
